Bittersweet Graduation

Bittersweet is a song by Big Head Todd and the Monsters, and some of the lyrics are perfect in describing this day.

"It's bittersweet, more sweet than bitter, Bitter than sweet.
It's a bittersweet surrender."

The Columbus Academy class of 2011 graduated in the gym. Thanks to the pluchas*** and thunderstorms, we sat in folding chairs in a humid, hot and crowded gymnasium. The wall fans did little or nothing to move the stagnant air around.

Surrounded by hundreds of camera clicking families we sat and watched as Mitchell got his diploma. I tried to capture the moment but there was no way I could get a decent action shot,
this was the best I could do.

There were introductions. There were speeches. There were awards. There was an undertone of sadness as one of the most well liked men at the school was not there. We saved a seat for Coach Barren and we clapped when the called his name. We honored him for being there in spirit.

Thanks to the zoom feature on my video camera, I was able to get a decent clip of the actual diploma action.

No cap and gown for Columbus Academy, just suit and tie. It was very tasteful and nice.

Mitchell posed for the obligatory photos. He respected the notion that Coach would have wanted the class of 2011 to celebrate their day.

Mitchell smiled but all the while he was profoundly saddened. As a parent, it is obvious when your child is hurting, and this was a bittersweet day for Mitchell.

I know that Mitchell was especially touched that his Aunt Shelbie was able to be at his graduation.
Nothing could stop her from seeing him shine. Nothing. Not even being on a ventilator. I would like half the strength and determination that Shelbie has- she is truly amazing. I know that having her there made Mitchell realize the show must go on.

The luncheon at BRIO was hosted by Mitchell's grandparents following the commencement.

It was nice to be able to relax and enjoy in the company of so many people that love and respect Mitchell.

"It's bittersweet, more sweet than bitter, Bitter than sweet.
It's a bittersweet surrender."

***Pluchas
Ploock-has
Raining like crazy, pouring buckets of rain.
We wanted to go swimming but the sky was about to pluchas.
